Earthbind® Prime Coat is a quality, versatile, and environmentally friendly penetrating prime cure.
EB Prime Coat can be safely stored and easily applied and was developed as an alternative for the traditional, unsafe asphalt cutback.
EB Prime is formulated with eco-friendly biopolymers and surfactants, and it does not contain any volatile organic carbons (VOC’s).
As a penetrating prime cure, EB Prime Coat works by binding loose soil or aggregate particles together, thus strengthening the soil/aggregate matrix and preventing even the smallest particles from becoming airborne as fugitive dust. In addition, EB Prime Coat will add water resistance to the treated soil particles and will not re-solubilize in rainwater after curing.
Earthbind® Prime Coat is sold and transported in a concentrate and is diluted in water prior to application.
As a penetrating prime cure, EB Prime:

Applied to aggregate roads just prior to paving with asphalt,EB Prime coat acts as a moisture barrior between the aggregate base and the asphalt layer. In addition it binds the two products together, to keep them from separating. EB Prime coat eliminates this failure.
As a prime coat, EB can be applied onto a surface or mixed into the uppermost portion of a compacted granular base before the application of an asphalt surface treatment.
The chemistries of the Earthbind® allow for exceptional aggregate penetration, waterproofing, and adhesion to asphalt overlays. In addition, EB works especially well on granular bases with excessive fines.
Earthbind® Prime Coat is can:
Help seal the surface pores of a granular base therefore resisting moisture from migrating into and out of the base;
Strengthen the surface of a granular base by binding aggregates together;
Protect the base during inclement weather;
Mitigate fugitive dust;
Protect the base from limited traffic prior to pavement
Promote adhesion between a granular base and the asphalt surface treatment.
When compared to other prime coats:
Most of the prime products in the market are asphalt cutback that is formulated with an organic solvent used as a “cutter”. The organic solvent is not considered to be environmentally-friendly. In contrast, EB does not contain any organic solvents. EB is considered to be environmentally-friendly.
Traditional prime cote due to the organic solvent has a longer curing time when compared to EB. Traditional prime coat usually requires at least 3-days to cure whereas EB can cure in as little as few hours.
Traditional asphalt emulsions (e.g., SS-1, CSS-1, etc.) do not work well as a prime on an aggregate base with fine particles. The fine dust particles greatly inhibit penetration. In contrast due to its unique formulation, EB penetrates fine particles very well.
Traditional asphalt emulsions are either Anionic (SS-1) or Cationic (CSS-1).
Anionic emulsions used as a prime are specific for aggregates with an overall positive charge (Limestone) whereas cationic emulsions are used on aggregates with a negative charge (Granite). In contrast, EB is non-ionic and can be used on both positive and negative charged aggregates.
Petroleum resin prime cures may be formulated with materials that are traditionally used as lubricating oils. These petroleum resins may not adhere to an asphalt overlay as well as primes that are formulated with Asphaltenes due to differing chemistry. EB’s unique formulation ensures that there will be a good bond between the treated granular base surface and an asphalt surface treatment. EB’s chemistry will greatly reduce the likelihood of delamination between the base and asphalt surface treatment.
